FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

- How does tattoo removal/lightening work?
At Thou Art, we use an Active Q Switched Laser. In contrast to a conventional passive laser, this type of laser generates a high powered beam of light, but in extremely short bursts, and thus allowing greater precision and targeting of the tattoo ink pigment.
As a result, the pigment is broken down into smaller particles, which are then absorbed and disposed of by the body's natural immune defences, and results in the gradual lightening of the tattoo.
So basically, the laser breaks up the ink in the tattoo, and the body cleans up the pieces.

- Does Laser Removal/Lightening Hurt?
Most people liken being lasered to the discomfort of being snapped by a rubber band, but less painful than the application of a tattoo.

- What does a laser session entail?
You will be shown to a comfortable 'laser safe' room. Your operator will explain the treatment procedure, and ensure that the correct area is to be treated. Using Universal Precautions, the skin will be cleaned (and shaved if necessary). Protective eye wear will be provided, and MUST be worn by both you and the operator. When you are in an appropriate comfortable position and are ready, the laser applicator will be passed over the tattoo until fully covered. Aftercare advice will given, and most normal activities can be recommenced immanently.

- How many treatments will I need?
The amount of treatments needed can vary significantly from one person to the next, and is dependent on several factors, such as skin type/tone, the type of tattoo (professional tattoos normally take longer to respond), tattoo density, and tattoo colour. Some clients notice a significant difference after only a few treatments, others may need 6 to 12 before maximum results are achieved.

- How long do I have to wait between appointments
We recommend intervals of 4-6 weeks between appointments. This time period gives your body time to 'dispose' of the ink pigment that the laser has broken down.
Your first session however can take place one week after your patch test.

- What is a test patch? Before commencing your laser treatment, it is important that we carry out a test patch on a small area of the tattoo approx. 7 days before. Doing so allows us to see how your skin reacts to the laser application, and helps us determine how best to proceed with treatment.

- What types of tattoo respond best to laser treatment?
Amateur or black tattoos tend to respond quicker than professional or coloured, as do old and faded respond faster than new.

- Are there any risks associated with Lasering?
Provided that aftercare is carried out as advised, and that any health problems are disclosed during your consultation, then risk of infection or negative reaction is very low.
Rarely, hyperpigmentation (darkening or the skin) or hypopigmentation (lightening of the skin) may occur.

- How long does each session last?
This will depend upon the size of the tattoo, but treatment time is usually 10-30 minutes.

- How much does laser treatment cost?
We offer FREE consultation and test patching. Treatment cost starts at £25 per session.
